What was once a horse barn, built in 1860 has been rejuvenated into a Fire Educational Center that has taught children and adults of all ages, and hundreds of eager students. On October 7, 2011, 100 first graders from Fostertown Elementary School in Newburgh visited the Fire Safety and Education Center at the Orange County Firefighters Museum and since, we have been educating children on Fire Safety at our Educational Center.
A few of the lessons students learned include: how to identify fire hazards in the home, the importance of knowing 2 ways out, the correct way to stop drop and roll, the importance of staying low, how to properly use 911, the importance of having a family escape plan complete with an agreed upon meeting place and the value of smoke detectors.
Students also have the opportunity to tour the museum, view a ladder truck and speak with "Tank" both from the Montgomery Fire Department.
The museum and education center are available to all schools, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and more, free of charge. If you are interested, please call 845-457-9654.
