It took 200 years of firefighting before the first county-wide fire museum was born in 1996 a county-wide group of fire commissioners, chiefs, volunteer and professional firefighters decided to create the Orange County Firefighters Museum. OCFM was formed as a not-for-profit organization in chartered as a New York state educational institution in June, 1997 the board agreed to purchase the old firehouse in the village of Montgomery as the museum’s site the building is situated in an historic district.

The Orange County Firefighters Museum displays unique memorabilia and moments in time of the fire service in Orange County, while offering a distinct educational experience for adults and children alike. At The Firefighters Museum, we vow to keep history alive by honoring our fallen heroes, sharing the historical narrative of local fire squads, and chronicling the brave men and women who courageously fought fires and saved lives. OCFM features fire-metic exhibits, priceless relics, firefighter’s suits and historic living quarters, and a children’s education center. The Purposes of the museum as set forth in the its constitution are exclusively educational in nature, to wit:
Collect and Preserve and Interpret objects related to fire fighting and fire fighters in Orange County and
Research and Document and Disseminate information on the history and equipment of the Orange County volunteer and paid fire companies, fire safety, and fire prevention. Explore our collection of historic memorabilia.

Experience the Fire Education Center


With the help of many hardworking hands, grants from The Town of Montgomery, the Village of Walden, the Village of Maybrook, the Village of Montgomery, and the Walden Rotary Club, the 1860 Horse Barn Fire Safety Education Center has been brought to life and educated hundreds of students.
